GJ’s Whiteley wins in Houston
Jim Whiteley won his second consecutive NHRA Top Alcohol Dragster event last weekend in the O’Reilly Spring Nationals at Royal Purple Raceway outside of Houston.
The Grand Junction man qualified for eliminations with a 5.279 second run at 273.16 mph. He had a bye in the first round, then beat Buddy Domingue in the second round with a 5.295 run at 272.01 mph. Whiteley defeated Mark Taliaferro in the semifinals with a 5.294 run at 272.83 mph.
In the finals, Whiteley ran a 5.264 at 273.77 to beat defending World Champion Duane Shields (5.380 at 268.97).
“We are just tickled to death with the way the weekend went,” said Whiteley in a press release. “Norm (Grimes) and the team really have a handle on what the car wants right now. The car was very consistent in the early numbers all weekend. We didn’t make many changes until the final when Norm decided to try to tickle it a little from half track on.”
Whiteley and the YNot Racing Team added the O’Reilly Summer Nationals on May 18-20 in Topeka, Kan., to their schedule this season.
“We’re on a roll right now, so we need to stay on it,” Whiteley said in the release. “We had originally planned to skip Topeka, but I don’t think it would be wise to back off now. The car is just running too good.”
