GJ’s Wright heads U.S. team in Bueno Cup
Susan Wright of Grand Junction will lead the U.S. women’s seniors tennis team into the Maria Esther Bueno Cup next week in Mallorca, Spain.
Wright, ranked No. 1 in the world for 2008 in women’s 50-older singles, made a U.S. Cup team for the seventh consecutive year. She is one of a four-woman team selected by the USTA from the top American players in her age division. Her teammates include Diane Fishburne of Charleston, S.C., Carolyn Nichols of Lodi, Calif., and Marianne Robertson of Malibu, Calif.
The Maria Esther Cup is April 27 through May 2 on European red clay courts.
“I’m getting better on clay all the time,” Wright said. “I played well last time. I’m excited to play in Spain.”
Three of the four women, including Wright, were on the U.S. team that won the 2008 Cup in Antalya, Turkey. The U.S. has won the past three Bueno Cup titles.
Wright played several years on the pro circuit after her graduation from high school. She returned to international competition at the senior level in 2003.
She has won 24 USTA National Championship singles and doubles titles in six years. She won all four national women’s 50-older doubles titles in 2008 and 2007.
Wright was selected the outstanding Colorado Female Player of the year in 2004 and ’08 and received the Sportswomen of Colorado’s top tennis honor the same years.
