GJ’s Wright helps USA capture cup in Turkey

For the second consecutive year, Susan Wright helped the U.S. women’s 50-older tennis team capture the ultimate prize.

The Grand Junction woman led the USA to their Maria Bueno Cup title recently in Antalya, Turkey.

USA defeated Australia 2-1 with wins in singles by Wright and Diane Fishburne. Wright defeated the No. 4-ranked women’s 50-older player in the world, Lynn Mortimer, 6-1, 6-2 and Diane Fishburne defeated world champion Ros Balodis 6-1, 6-7, 6-1 in the other singles match. Australia scored its point with a win in the doubles match.

“That was the first time we won both singles (against Australia) with Ros playing,” Wright said. “Diane played wonderful.”

The USA swept Finland, Netherlands, New Zealand and France 3-0 en route to the final.

The matches were played on clay courts. There were 19 countries vying for the Cup.

“You have to work more diligently (on clay),” said Wright, who admittedly prefers faster surfaces.

Wright and her USA teammates are each getting a turn to keep the trophy and Wright has it now.

The Bueno Cup title capped the end to a spectacular year for Wright.

She reached the doubles final in the world individual tournament and the semifinals in the singles tournament.

She won 11 Gold Balls and two Silver Balls in USTA national events. She won the ‘Grand Slam’ in doubles and won three of the four major tournaments in singles. Wright won the age 45-older National Grass Championships in singles and doubles as well.
