The Grand Mesa Major boys Little League baseball team got off to a rough start in Friday’s opening round of the Southwestern Regional tournament in Waco, Texas.
White Hall, Ark., defeated Grand Mesa 12-2 in the first game of pool play for both teams.
White Hall led 8-0 after the top of the third inning on the strength of a four-run second inning.
After a solo home run by Grand Mesa’s Skyler Hancock in the bottom of the third, White Hall answered with four runs in the top of the fourth.
Grand Mesa tried to rally in its half of the fourth but, with two runners on, got two quick outs to end the inning.
Dalton Weinischke absorbed the loss on the mound for Grand Mesa.
Hancock went 2 for 2 at the plate. Terick Wilkerson had an RBI single.
Grand Mesa continues pool play against Eastdale, N.M., at 7 tonight.
The Grand Mesa Senior boys also struggled in their Southwestern Regional opener, falling to New Mexico 8-4.
As with the Majors, the Seniors fell behind 7-0 in the second inning.
“It was the mental errors that hurt us,” Grand Mesa coach Steve Steinkirchner said.
Grand Mesa made a couple of base running errors that took it out of innings.
Steinkirchner used four pitchers, none of whom threw more than 35 pitches, so all will be available for today’s consolation-bracket game against Texas East at 4:30 p.m.
