Grand Junction Rockies recap, July 2, 2017
OREM 5, GRAND JUNCTION 4
Saturday at Brent Brown Ballpark
Grand Junction 4-9, Orem 9-4
Grand Junction rallied from a three-run deficit in the top of the eighth inning to tie the score at 4-4, but a two-out RBI single from Orem’s Keenner Pina scored Franklin Torres from third base to end the game. It was the first walk-off win of the season for the Owlz, who won their second consecutive game.
The Rockies seem to be making a habit of playing close games. Each of their past four games have been decided by three runs or less, with the past two games decided by one run.
At the plate
Ryan Vilade finished 2 for 5 to pace the Rockies’ six-hit attack. Vilade’s RBI single with no one out in the eighth sparked Grand Junction’s three-run inning. The Rockies tied the game when Casey Golden’s double to center field scored Chad Spanberger from first base.
Pina finished 3 for 4 with four RBI. Orem leadoff hitter Leonardo Rivas was 2 for 4 with a walk, with the two combining for five of the Owlz’ seven hits.
The key inning
A one-out error by Spanberger at first base allowed Torres to reach in the bottom of the ninth inning, and he moved to second when Ryan Vega walked. Harrison Wenson popped out to Spanberger for the second out, but Pina followed with his game-winning single to end it.
On the mound
Colton Hathcock (0-3) took the loss for GJ, allowing one walk and Pina’s single with two strikeouts in 1 2/3 innings. Orem’s Jorge Gonzalez (1-0) got the final out of the ninth inning with two GJ Rockies on base to pick up the victory.
