Grand Junction Rockies recap, July 3, 2017

Orem 2

Sunday at Brent Brown Ballpark

Grand Junction 5-9, Orem 9-5

On the mound

The Rockies, who for the past few nights have seen stellar performances from their bullpen, saw a stellar outing from starting pitcher Jeffri Ocando (2-0). The 6-foot-1 right-hander threw six solid innings, allowing only one hit and one unearned run with three walks and three strikeouts. He had runners on in every inning except the second, stranding six Orem baserunners.

Andres Heredia (1-2) lasted four innings for the Owlz, allowing three hits, two earned runs and two walks with four strikeouts.

At the plate

Shortstop Ryan Vilade went 2 for 3 to pace Grand Junction’s seven hit attack, hitting a two-run home run to right field in the third inning and a double in the fifth. Chad Spanberger and Casey Golden also hit doubles.

The Rockies are now hitting .304 as a team for the season. Vilade is hitting a team-best .360.

Orem, which leads the Pioneer League with a .324 team batting average through the first 14 games of the season, was limited to five singles by Rockies pitchers. The Owlz, however, drew seven walks to give themselves chances to pull closer to Grand Junction but stranded 12 baserunners after a 2-for-10 batting performance with runners in scoring position.

The key inning

The Owlz pulled within two runs when Torii Hunter Jr. singled in Harrison Wenson from second base. Jefry Valdez replaced Hunter Williams on the mound and walked Orem’s Manuel Guzman to load the bases with two outs, but Valdez struck out Yefry Santana looking to end the threat.

Valdez pitched 1 1/3 innings with one walk and two strikeouts to get his second save of the season.
