Grand Junction wins Day 1 of SWL golf
The Grand Junction Tigers won the Day 1 team title at the Southwestern League Tournament in Durango on Monday.
The tournament was delayed by weather with the final group still on the course. But when Grand Junction’s Greg Gibson drained a par on the final hole, it gave the Tigers the victory at 224.
They were followed by Durango at 226, and Montezuma-Cortez, Fruita Monument and Montrose at 227.
The two-day tournament is set up so there are team and individual titles determined on each day.
The Southwestern League championship will be determined by the lowest combined two-day total.
Jakob Rudosky of Montezuma-Cortez shot a 69 to win the first day title.
Grand Junction’s Donny Kinnaman and Fruita Monument’s Troy Dangler finished second at 72. Grand Junction’s Trevor Olkowski and Montrose’s Tyrus Lopez shot 73.
Other local scores included Fruita Monument’s Jacob Johnson and Montrose’s Riley Willis at 76, Tanner Creel from Montrose at 78, and Gibson and Fruita Monument’s Brandon Speer at 79.
Twelve teams are competing in the tournament, which includes four teams from New Mexico.
Today’s tournament will have the top golfers from the first day in the same pairings.
