Grand Valley dominates 3A WSL girls hoops team
Grand Valley’s Haley Johnson was selected the Class 3A Western Slope player of the year, leading a total of six Cardinals chosen to either the all-league first team or honorable mention list.
Johnson, a senior who has been selected to the all-league team three times, averaged more than 11 points and nearly seven rebounds per game for the Cardinals.
Mike Johnson, who just finished his 14th season as Grand Valley’s coach, was chosen as the league’s coach of the year.
The Cardinals won the regular-season league title, finished third in the district tournament and won a first-round state playoff game before bowing out in the second round.
Senior Ashlynn Speakman and junior Kyra Chenoweth also were selected to the first team for Grand Valley. Seniors Lauren Paskett and Ashley Radel and junior Jordan Scott were honorable-mention selections for the Cardinals.
Olathe placed a trio of juniors on the first team: Theresa Tafoya, Amanda Kinterknecht and Payton Grett. Junior Taylor Gibson and senior Temry Rodriguez were honorable-mention selections for the Pirates..
Cedaredge had senior Alyssa Isaman and sophomore Nellie Freeman chosen for the first team and senior Dakota Baldozier and junior Kristin Gardner as honorable-mention selections.
Rounding out the first team are: Moffat County seniors Allie Ehlers, Cheianne Pint and Jasmine Swindler; junior Britni Allen from Coal Ridge; seniors Maddie Nieslanik and Autumn Grandberry from Roaring Fork; and senior Jordan Wallin from Gunnison.
