Grand Junction girls get big lacrosse win
Santana Martinez scored a season-high seven goals Wednesday to lead the Grand Junction High School girls lacrosse team to a 17-7 victory at Battle Mountain.
The Tigers (9-0, 5-0 Mountain League) led 8-3 at halftime. Kacie Jay scored four goals, Brittany Wieseler and Morgan Emmons two each, and Kiana Atencio and Megan Gromke added one apiece. Grand Junction took 20 shots on goal and goalie Holly Meer made 11 saves.
Grand Junction plays at Palmer and Douglas County this weekend before wrapping up the regular season next week, playing the Huskies again May 3, then a showdown for what could determine the Mountain League title at Aspen on May 4.
Grand Junction won every match except No. 1 singles to defeat Fruita Monument 6-1. The Wildcats’ Janine Kirtland outlasted Maddie Hayduk 1-6, 6-2, 6-3 at No. 1 singles, but the Tigers swept through the rest of the matches. Kylie Pond and Madison Gurley of Grand Junction rallied for a 6-7, 6-3, 6-3 victory over McKenzie Kimball and Taryn Moon at No. 1 doubles. The rest of the matches were decided in straight sets.
Central 6, Montrose 1: The Warriors swept the singles matches without dropping a set. Central’s Aimee Basinski defeated Courtney Chism 6-1, 6-2 at No. 1 singles. Diana Garcia and Angelica Nevarez of Montrose won 6-4, 7-5 at No. 4 doubles.
Delta 5, Hotchkiss 2: The Panthers won two singles matches and three doubles matches for the victory led by the twin sisters, Alaisa Melgoza and Asiala Melgoza, winning at No. 2 and 3 singles.
Cedaredge moved within one game of third-ranked Hotchkiss in the Class 3A Western Slope League standings with an 8-4 win at home.
Blake Oard picked up the victory for the Bruins (12-3), who scored five runs in the third inning and had 10 hits. Hotchkiss (13-2) scored one run in the third and rallied for three in the seventh, but managed only six hits and committed three errors.
Olathe 8, Gunnison 4: Willy Corey hit a two-run home run and pitched five innings to lead the Pirates to the Western Slope League victory.
Coal Ridge 18, Grand Valley 13: The Titans took advantage of several Grand Valley errors for the Western Slope League victory.
