Grand Mesa Major girls headed to SW regional tournament in Waco
The Grand Mesa Little League Major girls have punched their ticket.
Monday, Grand Mesa defeated Shaw Heights 8-5 in the final of the Major girls state tournament in Westminster.
Grand Mesa moves onto the Southwestern Regional tournament in Waco, Texas, which begins July 28.
“We knew we’d have a hard time just getting out of districts,” Grand Mesa coach Kevin Rubalcaba said. “So to get out of districts was huge, and then to go win state was a great accomplishment.”
Grand Mesa defeated Shaw Heights 7-5 on the first day of the tournament before moving into the final with a 26-3 win over Academy.
Grand Mesa trailed 5-3 in the fifth inning to Shaw Heights, but scored five runs in the bottom of the fifth to take the lead.
Grand Mesa pitcher Jordyn Hays kept Shaw Heights scoreless in the sixth to clinch the state title.
“Everyone did something to contribute to the win,” Rubalcaba said. “We’ll go down to Waco, enjoy the atmosphere, and try to win some games.”
The lone state tournament hosted by District 1 is the 9-10 girls softball. Orchard Mesa is the District 1 host, with the tournament at Monument Little League. The tournament begins at 6 p.m. Friday, with Orchard Mesa playing Academy.
The Little League baseball state tournaments begin Thursday. Monument’s 9-10 boys play at North Boulder Little League.
Monument is also sending its 10-11 baseball team to the state tournament in Craig.
Palisade’s Major boys play at Cherry Creek Little League, with the Palisade Junior boys heading to Craig, opening play July 22.
The Senior boys tournament is also at Cherry Creek, with Monument in that tournament.
State champions in Majors, Juniors and Seniors advance to a Southwestern Regional tournament.
