Gunther’s big game not enough for Palisade

Despite 22 points from Palisade’s Kane Gunther, the Bulldogs fell in the second round of the Class 4A boys basketball playoffs on Friday.

No. 7 seed Palisade (18-7) led 18-14 after the first quarter, but No. 2 Pueblo Central (16-8), behind 22 points from Kevin Trujillo, dominated the third quarter.

“They had a couple pretty good shooters,” Palisade coach Steve Phillips said. “We had some bad defensive possessions, but you have to give them credit — they made shots.”

Luke McLean and Kyle Monger scored eight apiece for Palisade.

Arapahoe 52, Grand Junction 26: Grand Junction ran into a sturdy defense in the second round of the Class 5A boys basketball championships, losing to No. 1 seed Arapahoe (22-2) 52-26.

The No. 2 Tigers (15-9) scored two points in the first quarter.

Broderick Robinson led Grand Junction with nine points.

Shane Powers added seven for the Tigers.
