Gutsy call doesn’t work in Olathe’s first-round playoff loss
Olathe went for the win instead of a possible tie and overtime as the Pirates lost 14-13 to Bennett in the first round of the Class 2A state football playoffs Saturday in Bennett.
Eleventh-seeded Olathe scored a touchdown to cut the deficit to 14-13 with 1 minute, 11 seconds remaining in the game, then elected to go for the two-point conversion. The Bennett defense was up to the task and stopped the Pirates short to secure the victory.
The sixth-seeded Tigers (8-2) used a balanced running game and an effective passing game to advance to the second round. First, they had to overcome an early deficit.
Olathe (6-4) took a 7-0 lead in the first quarter, but Bennett scored touchdowns in the second and third quarters on a run by Kory Hudson and a 20-yard pass from Tanner Adams to Garrett Miller.
Bruins lose 1A playoff
Fifth-seeded Monte Vista pulled away from 12th-seeded Cedaredge to win a first-round Class 1A playoff game 20-7.
Monte Vista (8-2) took a 7-0 lead after the first quarter, but the Bruins, last year’s 1A state champion, scored early in the second quarter to tie the game 7-7.
Monte Vista took a 13-7 lead at the half on a 60-yard TD pass, and the Pirates upped the lead to 20-7 on a scoring run late in the third quarter.
Cedaredge (6-4) faced difficult field position for much of the fourth quarter and couldn’t mount a rally.
