Haas top middle school athletic director in state
Orchard Mesa Middle School Athletic Director Tom Haas hasn’t been to a Colorado Athletic Directors Association conference. There’s always the district track meet that weekend.
This year, District 51 Athletic Director Paul Cain told Haas he’d have to go, but didn’t tell him why.
Then a letter came in the mail, informing Haas he’d won the CADA Middle School AD of The Year award, which he will receive during the group’s annual conference from April 29-May 2 in Breckenridge.
“It’s still a surprise,” said Haas, who has worked for the district for 25 years. “It’s surprising, but it’s nice to be noticed for some of the things I do.”
Haas not only serves as the athletic director for Orchard Mesa Middle School, he also organizes middle school athletics for the entire district.
His job includes scheduling volleyball, boys and girls basketball, wrestling and track and field events.
He hires and evaluates coaches and organizes the paperwork required for middle school athletes to participate in sports.
He organizes officials and plays a large role in set-up and tear-down of middle school athletic events, particularly with wrestling and track and field.
From a district standpoint, Haas handles preseason and postseason coaches’ meetings, any potential rules violations and dealing with cancellations and postponements.
He also coaches the throwers for the Orchard Mesa track and field team, and that’s why he’s missed the CADA conferences.
Cain said Haas’ work makes a positive impact on the district.
“He does a lot,” Cain said. “He does the scheduling, all the tournaments and he does a great job.”
