Hansen promoted to High Desert Mavs
Shaver Hansen is getting another chance.
The former Fruita Monument High School standout has proved he’s healthy and ready for the next level.
The Seattle Mariners organization promoted Hansen up to their Class A Advanced League team, the High Desert (Calif.) Mavericks the past Thursday.
Hansen, 23, is hitting .444 in three games since he was called up.
The second baseman pulled a hamstring trying to beat out a throw to first base in spring training.
Hansen, who was drafted in the sixth round of the 2009 Major League Baseball draft, started his season with the Mariners’ Class A Clinton (Iowa) LumberKings in the Midwest League after the hamstring healed. He hit .220 with five extra-base hits and 12 RBI for Clinton before he was called up to High Desert last week.
He is playing in the California League against two other Western Slope products.
Central High graduate Kiel Roling is playing for the Modesto (Calif.) Nuts, the Colorado Rockies Class A Advanced team. Delta High graduate Chris Wilson is pitching for the San Jose (Calif.) Giants, the San Francisco Giants Class A Advanced team.
Roling, 24, is hitting .257 with eight doubles, one triple, nine home runs and 31 RBI for Modesto. The first baseman was the California League player of the week for the week of May 23-29.
Wilson, 24, is 0-1 with a 2.35 ERA in 10 relief appearances for San Jose. He has allowed four earned runs, 13 hits, six walks and struck out 15 in 151⁄3 innings.
Moffat County graduate Chris Winder, 21, is playing outfield for the Tampa Bay Rays Class A Short-season club, Hudson Valley (N.Y.) Renegades. He is hitting .394 with three extra-base hits and four RBI in eight games.
