Hotchkiss sweeps titles at own invite
Hotchkiss had the top two finishers in each race as the Bulldogs won the boys and girls team titles Saturday at the Hotchkiss Invitational cross country meet.
Natalie Anderson won the girls race with a time of 21 minutes, 3 seconds, followed by Jennifer Celis with a time of 21:31, and the Bulldogs claimed four of the top nine places to total 16 points.
Montrose was second with 40 points, led by Dana Shellhorn’s fourth-place finish.
Cody Bartlett won the boys race with a time of 18:38, and teammate Andrew Tiedemann placed second in 19:04.3, as Hotchkiss put four runners in the top 15 to total 22 points.
Palisade was second with 33 points, led by Anders Van Calcar, who took third in 19:04.9.
Central High School claimed championships in five flights as the Warriors won the Delta Invitational boys tennis tournament Saturday.
Jessi Nordstrom, Drake Giese and Lael Nordstrom all won their finals to sweep the singles in the two-day tournament. In doubles play, the Warriors’ Brent Bollinger and Bryce Atchison at No. 3 and Brigham Beckstead and Trace Levinson at No. 4 won titles.
Grand Junction 7, Smoky Hill 0: The Tigers swept Smoky Hill in a nonleague dual Saturday. Smoky Hill, hosting the dual in Aurora, thought the start time was 3:30 p.m., but it was scheduled for 10 a.m. Smoky Hill and was unable to put together its full team and defaulted two matches.
Will Austin ran for 104 yards and scored four touchdowns as Paonia won its first football game of the season, 38-6, over Dolores in nonconference action.
Taylor Walters added a 19-yard touchdown run for the Eagles (1-3).
Dove Creek 55, Plateau Valley 0: Dove Creek led 42-0 at the half en route to the Class A-8 Western Conference win.
Fruita Monument beat Montezuma-Cortez 3-1 on Saturday after dropping the first game 25-20.
Durango beat Grand Junction 25-17, 25-9, 25-13.
