Howard survives scare to advance to JUCO
For Howard (Texas) College making the Alpine Bank Junior College World Series with one loss is better than not making it at all.
The Hawks defeated Temple 4-3 in 10 innings Thursday at the Southwestern District championship in Fort Worth, Texas to advance to the May 23-30 World Series at Suplizio Field.
Howard (58-1) had pushed their winning streak to 57-0 before Temple defeated them 8-2 on Wednesday. In Thursday’s game, the Hawks trailed 3-2 in the ninth inning but scored to tie the game. The Leopards had a chance to win the game in the bottom half of the ninth but grounded into a double play with the bases loaded to force extra innings.
In the top of the 10th, Howard scored, then got three straight outs to advance to Grand Junction.
The Hawks qualify for JUCO for the first time since 1991, when they won it all behind the pitching of tournament MVP Frank Rodriguez.
Howard is the fourth team to qualify and will play at noon on May 23 against the winner of the Western District, which began its tournament Thursday. The Western District is between Central Arizona College, Northeastern Junior College, Western Nevada College and College of Southern Idaho.
