In Brief: CMU men’s tennis team loses two

The Colorado Mesa men’s tennis team had several close matches with Division I opponents Utah State and Weber State, but still came up short Saturday.

Utah State defeated the Mavericks 6-1. Mesa’s No. 6 singles player, Trevor Brown, won 6-4, 6-3.

“It was a great win for Trevor,” CMU coach Dan MacDonald said. “We were up a break in all the doubles.”

Weber State defeated the Mavericks 6-1 later in the day in Ogden, Utah. Freshman Cody Freischlag won 7-5, 7-6 
(7-4) at No. 4 singles. Blake Demond had three match points before losing 4-6, 7-6 (13-11), 10-3 at No. 5 and Brown had a break point in the third set of a 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 loss.

“We had chances,” MacDonald said. “Spencer (Weinberg) was up in his matches (at No.2 singles). That was a good win by Cody. We fought hard and played well.”
