In Brief: Halboth wins weekly state award
Will Halboth’s 138 rushing yards helped Mesa State College defeat CSU-Pueblo last weekend on the road, and Monday the sophomore running back from Lone Tree was selected the National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame Colorado Chapter player of the week.
Saturday was Halboth’s second straight 100-yard rushing game. He is averaging 93.8 yards per game for the Mavericks (4-3, 4-1 RMAC), who play Saturday at Western State in Gunnison.
McCormick, Howard honored
Antoinette McCormick reached double figures in kills in three straight matches last week to lead Mesa State’s volleyball team to three crucial road victories.
The sophomore middle hitter from Grand Junction was selected the RMAC offensive player of the week for her 36-kill performance. McCormick committed only seven hitting errors in 59 attacks.
Whitney Howard, a junior libero from Bayfield, was selected the RMAC defensive player of the week after recording 43 digs in the three matches, including 18 against both Regis and Metro State.
Mesa State (12-8, 10-1 RMAC) opens a six-match homestand Friday night against fifth-ranked Nebraska-Kearney (20-1, 11-0).
Mixed Martial Arts
Hancock, Brenton top MMA card
Bush Cree Promotions is sponsoring a 13-bout mixed martial arts and boxing card Saturday at Two Rivers Convention Center.
Locals Logan Hancock and Jason Brenton will fight in co-main events.

Rulon Gardner in town Friday
Former Olympic wrestling champion Rulon Gardner will speak at Two Rivers Convention Center on Friday on the subject “Never Give Up, Never Stop Trying.”
The speech, which is being sponsored by the Boy Scout Western Colorado Council, begins at 7 p.m. Doors open at 6 p.m.
