A recent study found Grand Junction ranked 16th among the most secure small cities in the United States.

It’s the third time the city has placed in the top 20 for safety, as measured by the Farmers Insurance Group, according to a release distributed by the company last week.

Farmers Insurance Group cites data compiled by, which took into consideration factors such as crime statistics, extreme weather, risk of natural disasters, life expectancy and job loss, the release said. Some 138 cities with populations under 150,000 were measured against one another, according to the company.

Grand Junction was the only Colorado city represented in the study’s top 20.

The release said an analysis determined that the Lewiston, Idaho, and Clarkston, Wash., area was the nation’s top spot for 2009.
