JUCO World Series a finalist for SportsTravel Magazine Award
Somebody out there likes the Alpine Bank Junior College World Series.
For the second time in three years, the JUCO World Series is a finalist for a SportsTravel Magazine Award as a top collegiate athletic event.
The magazine recognizes top athletic events, from amateur to professional, as nominated by readers of the magazine. Online voting is open through Sept. 15 at http://www.SportsTravelMagazine.com.
Anyone with a valid email address can vote for the various categories, plus an overall sports event of the year. Once a ballot is submitted, the voter will receive an email, which he or she must confirm in order for the vote to count.
Jamie Hamilton, the chairman of the JUCO World Series, said he was honored that the tournament is being recognized again — JUCO was also nominated for the award in 2012 — although “that’s not why we do it.”
“That’s not us nominating, it’s somebody else who has been through here, whether that’s a sports writer, or an athletic director or a parent of somebody, nominating us again,” Hamilton said in a news release. “I’m just enthralled by that.”
JUCO is up against the NCAA Division I men’s basketball tournament, the NCAA Division I College World Series, the NCAA Division I Women’s Softball World Series and the STIHL Timbersports Collegiate Series in the “Best Sports Event Series or Circuit” collegiate category.
JUCO is listed as “2014 NJCAA Division I Baseball World Series, Grand Junction, CO” on the ballot.
The 2013 USA Pro Cycling Challenge is nominated for “Best Sports Event or Series” in the professional sports division.
The magazine caters to the sports event and management industry.
“Since the location of the event is a major part of the criteria for being nominated, the people of Grand Junction should take great pride in knowing that an event held in their city is being recognized for its excellence,” Timothy Schneider, publisher of SportsTravel, said in a release announcing JUCO’s nomination.
“SportsTravel readers are the leaders of the sports-event industry and they really know what it takes to execute a high-quality athletic event. The SportsTravel Awards program is an opportunity for them to honor their peers and the cities that host sporting events for a job well done.”
Winners in each category will be announced at the TEAMS Conference & Expo this November in Las Vegas.
The JUCO Committee has launched a campaign through social media and its website asking fans, schools and teams to vote for the tournament.
