Kame, Laro, Flohr receive Alex Bennett memorial scholarships
During the fall, local basketball players “bring it” in honor of Alex Bennett at the annual 3-on-3 basketball tournament.
During the spring, the funds from the tourney are used to give scholarships honoring Bennett.
Wednesday at Wells Fargo, Central High School’s Amy Kame, Palisade’s Benjamin Laro and Mesa State College’s Sean Flohr received the Alex Bennett memorial scholarship.
“Alex was a great kid,” said Steve Irion, who’s on the board that determines scholarship winners. “We pass out the scholarships and we feel how much they appreciate it.”
Bennett died in a automobile accident in 2003, one week before he was to begin his junior year at Grand Junction High School.
This is the sixth year scholarships have been awarded. The Mesa State player is determined by Mavericks coach Jim Heaps. The high school students are chosen by the Bennett family based on an essay they submit.
“The essay has a lot to do with how basketball has helped them in life,” Irion said.
The funds for the scholarship are generated by the 3-on-3 basketball tournament at Mesa State College in November. The tournament has grown every year, and this past year the tournament had more than 100 teams, with about 350 players, ranging from Grade 5-6 boys and girls teams to an adult open division.
