Kiel’s late layup lifts GJ to win

Zach Kiel scored the game-winning layup with 0.3 seconds left after a last-second steal as Grand Junction took its first lead of the game in a 35-34 win over Durango on Saturday.

The Tigers (15-5, 7-1 Southwestern League) forced three turnovers in the final 10 seconds of the game to overcome a four-point deficit. D.J. Wells finished a crucial three-point play with less than five seconds left to bring the Tigers within one point.

Wells finished with 12 points and teammate Broderick Robinson also had 12.

Hotchkiss 54, Rangely 47: Cody Bartlett scored 21 points, including five 3-pointers, to lead Hotchkiss (12-6, 6-4 1A/2A Western Slope League).

Girls basketball

Sydni Brandon had five steals and eight points as Grand Junction defeated Durango 41-26.

Bri Baldwin and Elisha Jahnke each added seven points for the Tigers (17-3, 7-1).

Delta 49, Palisade 30: Skylyn Webb had 15 points and Callie Gafford added 14 points as Delta (16-3, 14-0 4A Western Slope League) extended its winning streak to 16 games and held host Palisade to two first-quarter points.

Jenna Brown and Aspen Guray led Palisade (8-11, 7-7) with eight points apiece.

Rifle 56, Battle Mountain 23: Rifle (13-6, 11-3) scored 24 points in the first quarter and held Battle Mountain scoreless in the second quarter of their 4A Western Slope League game.

Other scores: Montrose beat Montezuma-Cortez 71-27.
