King’s goal lifts Mesa past Adams St. in 2OT
Mackenzie King scored the game-winning goal on a free kick in the final minute for Colorado Mesa University’s women’s soccer team, which rallied for a 2-1 double-overtime victory against Adams State in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference game at Walker Field.
The win gave the Mavericks (7-5-2, 5-3-1 RMAC) their third win in four games and moved them into a tie with Regis for third place in the conference standings. Mesa has almost doubled its win total from the 2015 season after finishing 4-10-4, with three of those victories last year coming at the tail end of the season.
CMU’s Alexis Allard sent the game into overtime with her goal in the 89th minute, getting a centering pass from Hannah Naftanel near the net and heading it into the goal to tie the game at 1-1. The Grizzlies (7-6-0, 4-4-0) had taken the lead just four minutes earlier, with Elizabeth Anderson scoring off a corner kick from Elaine Van de Wille that found its way to Anderson.
King made sure her shot from 30 yards away on a free kick found its way to the net for the golden-goal score.
Mesa dominated from the start, holding a 21-9 advantage in total shots. Ten ofthose were on goal, with Adams State goalkeeper Teagan Moore tallying eight saves.
Katelyn Huston had two saves for Mesa, which continues conference play Friday night at CSU-Pueblo.
