The 21-year-old spent his rookie season at Casper.
He’s sure glad he’s in Grand Junction.
“It’s a completely different environment from Casper,” Roliard said. “Everything is so nice here.”
And the difference between the cities?
“I’d say the field and how many fans I think we’re gonna have this year,” Roliard said. “Right when I got here I felt like it was going to be a lot more baseball-friendly than what Casper was.”
And what Casper was, Roliard said, was not much.
“Just wide-open plains,” he said. “Not too many fans.”
Roliard was 1-0 with a 4.76 ERA last season. He had 36 strikeouts in 28 innings.
Roliard, who will be utilized in lefty-on-lefty situations, said his slider is his “out” pitch.
Now he wants to develop consistency.
“I need to be able to perform at the highest level on an everyday basis,” he said. “Ups and down will happen. You just take he best of the downs and learn and come out the next day and get better anyway you can.”
Roliard scanned Suplizio Field on the team’s second day of practice and called it a hitter’s park.
“Looking at that 302 (feet) down the left-field line, it’s pretty much a hitter’s park,” he said. “It feels like the wind has been blowing out yesterday and today, so it should be interesting.”
