Late goal dooms Mesa State women

The Mesa State women’s soccer team played 85 quality minutes of soccer but allowed a late goal to fall to Regis University.

Tied 0-0 at the 85th minute, Regis’s Jordan Miller slipped a goal past Kaitlin Bennett and gave the Rangers the 1-0 lead it needed for the victory.

Katie Horn assisted on the goal which dropped the Mavericks to 3-3 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play.

The Mavericks (8-4, 3-3 RMAC) overcame a first period where they were outshot 10-2 and needed three Julie Rasmussen saves to keep the game tied.

Mesa got its opportunities in the second period, getting eight shots including shots on goal but were unable to score on Regis (7-5-0, 4-2-0 RMAC) goalkeeper Rosie Campbell.

Alyssa Michel and Natalie Koen led the Mavericks with four shots each.

Regis was led by Carter Cornett who had six shots, none of which were on goal.  Lexi Tagen led the Rangers in shots on goal with two.

Campbell had three saves in goal against the Mavericks.

Wednesday, The Mavericks will attempt to bounce back against Dixie State.

The Mesa State men’s soccer team played until the second period of its game with Regis until the game was stopped because of bad weather. The game was tied 0-0 at the time. The two teams will hit the field again today at noon.

Following the game with Regis, the Mesa men won’t play again until Friday when it takes on Colorado School of Mines.
