Latek helps WarDogs go 1-1 in Durango double dual
Karolina Latek finished second in two events to lead the Central/Palisade girls swimming and diving team to a 1-1 record in a double-dual meet Friday at Durango.
Central/Palisade beat Montezuma-Cortez 620-399, Durango beat Central/Palisade 782-548 and Durango beat Montezuma-Cortez 787-355.
All three teams swam at once, and dual scores were separated from those results.
Latek took second in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2 minutes, 27.03 seconds and second in the 500 freestyle in 6:30.53.
Claiming third-place finishes for Central/Palisade were Liz Cottingham in the 200 individual medley (2:53.46), Mallory Wolf in 1-meter diving (157.55 points), Kyra Newhouse in the 100 breaststroke (1:25.85) and the Central/Palisade 400 freestyle relay team (Hanna Martin, Deneen LeTurgez, Mercedees Benavidez and Megan Bricker).
Newhouse added a fourth-place finish in the 50 freestyle (29.52), and she joined Latek, Cottingham and Currey Ventling on Central/Palisade’s fourth-place-finishing 200 medley and 200 freestyle relays.
Central/Palisade coach Steve Weir said his swimmers did a nice job of overcoming the 10-day layoff they had for the holiday break.
“They came back pretty much where they left off. You can’t ask for anything more than that,” Weir said.
