Lawmakers seek action on proposal for airport security

The Transportation Security Administration needs to act quickly on a proposed security plan for Grand Junction Regional Airport, federal legislators said.

U.S. Rep. Scott Tipton, R-Colo., and Sens. Michael Bennet and Mark Udall, both Democrats, on Monday asked TSA Administrator John Pistole to expedite study of the proposal.

“Due to the strain that the airport’s existing security protocol is placing on the community’s interests, we urge you to consider this request as judiciously as possible,” a letter by the legislators said.

The proposed plan was drafted with the participation of elected officials, the general-aviation community and the public to ensure airport security compliance “while promoting an environment beneficial to local business, commerce and flexibility of movement for general aviation,” the letter said.

The legislators said that if the proposal falls short of the administration’s requirements, “please provide a detailed written explanation of the insufficiencies and what would be required to bring the proposal into compliance.”
