O Street

I come from the brutal Civil War,

I come from the colorful leaves falling

in the month of September.

I come from sizzling fried chicken

with my mom’s apron floury and dirty.

I come from snow days and a view of the Grand Mesa.

I come from a mom who loves writing and never gives up.

I come from dad who at the end of every day

smells like airplane fuel.

I come from a family who once lived on a ranch.

I come from O Street and a playground my father loved.

I come from the basketball court, “She shoots, she scores!”

I come from the soccer field scoring two goals in a row.

I come from anything the world throws at me

even if it’s a basketball to the face.
