Beard, Webb finalists for honor

Hotchkiss senior Conner Beard and Delta senior Skylyn Webb are two of the 20 finalists for the 2012 Wendy’s High School Heisman Award in Colorado.

One boy and one girl will receive the award in each state Nov. 5. The state winners will be reduced to 12 national finalists, and the overall winners will be named Dec. 7 during an event in New York City.

Beard is a three-sport athlete, competing in football, baseball and track and field. He is one of the leaders on the Bulldogs’ football team that is 7-2 and will play in the first round of the Class 1A playoffs Saturday at Wiggins. In baseball, he batted .395 as a junior with 10 RBI, helping Hotchkiss to an 18-3 record.

Webb is a three-sport athlete in basketball, volleyball and track and field. She was an all-conference performer in basketball as a junior, averaging 17.5 points a game, helping Delta to a 20-5 record. She qualified for the 4A state track meet in 100- and 200-meter dashes as a junior. She is competing in volleyball and has 84 kills, 95 assists and 61 digs for the Panthers, who are 12-11 and will compete in a Class 4A regional Saturday at Durango.

Fruita Monument’s volleyball team qualified for the Class 5A Region 5 tournament. The Wildcats (18-5) are seeded No. 20 and play Saturday at No. 5 Mountain Vista, along with No. 32 Poudre.

Regional champions advance to state.

Area regionals in Class 4A also are on Saturday. No. 19 Montrose (14-9) plays in the Region 6 pool at Thompson Valley High School with No. 6 Thompson Valley and No. 31 Evergreen; No. 29 Delta (12-11) plays in the Region 8 pool at Durango High School with No. 8 Durango and No. 17 Pueblo West; and No. 25 Palisade (15-8) plays in the Region 12 pool at Ponderosa High with No. 12 Ponderosa and No. 13 Air Academy.

In Class 3A on Saturday, No. 23 Olathe (16-7) will head to Platte Valley High School for the Region 2 pool that includes No. 2 Platte Valley and No. 35 Centauri, and No. 33 Grand Valley (8-15) plays at University High School to take on No. 21 Peak to Peak and No. 4 University.

In Class 2A, Paonia (20-4), a No. 3 seed from District 5, plays at Vail Mountain High School against top-seeded Vail Mountain and No. 2 Dolores.
