Local organization gives kids a chance to experience mountain biking

Before the weather begins to turn from pleasant to unsympathetic, Saturday provides a great chance to get the outdoors fix.

The Colorado Plateau Mountain Bike Trail Association has two outdoor activities planned for Saturday.

First is “Take a Kid Mountain Biking day” at the Lunch Loop trail system. COPMOBA is inviting children ages 7-13 who are able to ride independently to try the new “Kid’s Meal” trail, which is located just below the main parking lot.

The “Kid’s Meal” is a beginner-level trail that is mostly single-track and has very little change in elevation. It is less than one mile long.

The event begins at 9:30 a.m. and is in celebration on the International Mountain Biking Association’s Take a Kid Mountain Biking day.

Interested riders must bring a working bicycle, helmet, water and sunscreen.

Beginning at 9 a.m., COPMOBA will be hosting a trail building at McInnis Canyons NCA. Nothing new, COPMOBA has sponsored over 100 trail maintenance work days since 1991.

This will be a new trail that will connect Mary’s Loop with other existing trails in an effort to provide more beginner and intermediate riding chances locally.

The joint project between COPMOBA, The Grand Junction BLM Field Office and the Friends of McInnis Canyons will begin at Kokopelli Trail head in Loma with the main project site being located about two miles from the trail head.

Work will finish at 5 p.m. with a free barbecue that is open to everyone. Volunteers should be ages 12 and up and are encouraged to help if only for a couple of hours.
