Longhorns upend Delta; Olathe shut out
In a cold and rainy night in Basalt, the Longhorns pulled away from Delta for a big 35-7 win over the Panthers in Class 2A action.
Basalt took a 14-7 lead at halftime, then went up 21-7 to go on to the nonconference win.
In Class 1A Western Slope Conference action, Olathe (2-1) was handed its first loss of the season, 14-0 against Centarui.
Cedaredge (1-2) earned its first win of the season with a 28-12 win over Vail Christian.
Paonia (2-1) was a 43-6 winner over Ridge View Academy, and Grand Valley (2-1) beat Roaring Fork, 41-0.
In a rare night race, the Southwest Sunset Cross Country race also served as the Southwestern League championships at Hillcrest Golf Club in Durango.
A pair of Central boys runners finished in the top four.
Cole Munoz of Widefield won the boys race with a time of 15 minutes, 55.88 seconds.
Evan Graff of Montrose was right behind him in second place at 15:58.06.
That earned him the SWL individual title.
Central’s Tyman Smart was third at 16:02.67, with teammate David Cardenas right behind in fourth at 16:04.46.
Durango swept the top three spots in the girls race with Kiara Hamlin winning in 19:32.81.
Durango’s Ruth Holcomb was second at 19:33.59 and Abby Scott third at 19:33.95.
Central senior Ivory Espinoza ran a strong race to finish fourth in 19:42.17.
Grand Junction freshmen Dolcie Hanlon was ninth at 20:25.76 and Mandy Moran 12th with a time of 20:29.74.
