Louisburg tops latest JUCO poll

Louisburg (N.C.) College went from nowhere to the top — at least for now.

The Hurricanes (27-0) are the new No. 1-ranked team in the NJCAA Division I baseball poll, released Wednesday. Louisburg has qualified for the Alpine Bank Junior College World Series 10 times, most recently in 2002.

The JUCO World Series is May 26-June 2 at Suplizio Field.

Louisburg (N.C.) College, which didn’t receive one vote in the preseason poll released the last week of January, rose to the top with a new coach, Mike McGuire. The Hurricanes received eight first-place votes and moved up from No. 3 in the previous poll.

Walters State (Tenn.) Community College (20-2) dropped from the top spot to No. 2.

Wabash Valley (Ill.) College (21-1) moved up five spots to No. 3. Iowa Western Community College (7-0) is fourth and Howard (Texas) College is fifth.

McLennan (Texas) Community College, Northeastern Oklahoma A&M, Central Alabama, Georgia Perimeter and Western Nevada College are ranked sixth through 10th.

Defending champion Navarro (Texas) College (13-7) and runner-up Central Arizona College (18-7) are not ranked in the top 20.
