Martinez shines for Colorado Mesa in Utah Valley Open
James Martinez reached his second tournament final this season to lead the Colorado Mesa wrestling team in the Utah Valley Open on Saturday in Orem, Utah.
The redshirt freshman from Rifle was one of four Maverick wrestlers to place in the top four at the tournament.
Martinez pinned one opponent, then won a major decision to reach the 149-pound finals. Andrew Hochstrasser, an unattached wrestler, defeated Martinez 23-7 in the final.
Dylan Granard and Justin Schumacher took third place and Tyler Sare placed fourth for the Mavs.
Granard reached the semifinals at 165 pounds, then defeated Jake Myler, an unattached wrestler, 12-4, for third place.
Schumacher reached the semifinals at 157 pounds and pinned David Meza of California State-Bakersfield in 22 seconds in the third-place match.
Sare reached the semifinals at 174 pounds and was pinned by a University of Wyoming wrestler in the third-place match.
Brayden Humphreys (141), Tyler Miles (157), Caleb Wyatt (165), Garrett Stowell (174), Mitch Wyatt (174), Paco Rentana-Quinones (285), Alex Wranik (285) and Chris Maynes (285) wrestled for CMU, but didn’t place.
