Mavericks drop two
Colorado Mesa’s softball team slipped back into fourth place in the conference after dropping a doubleheader Sunday at Adams State in Alamosa.
The Mavericks (22-15-1, 20-11-1 RMAC) entered the weekend in third place, but went 1-3 against the Grizzlies (18-14, 17-10), including losing 4-1 and 4-3 on Sunday.
In the opener, Mesa led 1-0 after four innings but gave up three runs in the bottom of the fifth, including two on a throwing error.
Ashley Pulido took the loss, allowing three runs on five hits in 4 1/3 innings. She struck out five, but Mesa was limited to six hits by Kelsey Sellars, who struck out six and didn’t walk a batter to pick up the win for Adams State.
In the second game, the Mavericks took a 3-2 lead on a two-run home run down the right-field line by Jessica Severinsen, her 10th of the season.
Mesa gave those two runs back in the bottom of the sixth, though, and went down in order in the seventh.
Pulido, who came on in relief in the second game, took the loss, allowing two runs on four hits in two innings of work.
Colorado Mesa wraps up the regular season with a four-game series Saturday and Sunday against Chadron State at Bergman Field.
