Mavericks earn berth to RMAC tourney

The Colorado Mesa women’s basketball team is in.

The Mavericks clinched a RMAC tournament berth with a 66-61 victory Friday night over Adams State at Plachy Hall in Alamosa.

“We’re thrilled we’re getting in (the tournament),” CMU coach Roger Walters said. “Especially what we went through in January with all the injuries.”

The Mavericks (13-12, 11-10 RMAC) play their regular season finale tonight at No. 15 Fort Lewis (21-4, 18-3 RMAC) and could finish anywhere from tied for fourth to eighth depending on other teams.

“We’ll play it out tomorrow and se where everybody lands,” Walters said. “If we could get fifth, that would be great for us.”

Katrina Selsor led Mesa with 17 points. Kelsey Sigl and Leanndra Gilbert scored 10 each.

“Katrina was really aggressive,” Walters said. “She got to the line eight or nine times. Any time she’s aggressive on the offensive end, we are at our best.”

Adams State (7-18, 6-15 RMAC) took an early 5-0 lead, prompting Walters to call timeout.

Mesa responded with a 14-3 run to take a 14-8 lead. Amy Weitzeil hit a 3-pointer during the run. The Mavericks led 28-19 at halftime.

“I thought we played pretty well tonight,” Walters said. “We didn’t shoot it well, but our defense played pretty well in the first half, we hit some big shots late and made our free throws.”

Mesa shot 34.5 percent from the floor, but drew 23 fouls and made 21 of 27 free throws (77.8 percent).

The Grizzlies came back in the second half and tied it twice, but Mesa went on a 7-2 run to lead 50-43. Dallas Rohrbaugh hit a 3-pointer during the stretch.

Adams refused to go away, cutting Mesa’s lead to one point with 47 seconds left.

That’s when Alaina Brennan, who just subbed in, scored, was fouled and hit a free throw for a 64-61 lead with 18 seconds left.

“We had a really good possession,” Walters said. “We reversed it twice, then Kelsey made a great pass to Alaina, who scored and made her free throw.”

Brennan hit one more free throw with eight seconds left to seal the victory.
