Mavericks score 26 runs in sweep
It was an offensive explosion.
The Colorado Mesa University softball team scored a total of 26 runs on 26 hits to sweep the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs 12-9 and 14-4 on Sunday in Colorado Springs.
The Mavericks (14-10, 12-8 RMAC) won three of four games in the series. It was their first series win since they swept Colorado State-Pueblo in a four-games series the last weekend of February.
Shannon McClenahan was 4 for 7 with six RBI to lead Mesa.
Colorado Mesa built a 4-0 lead in the first game, but the Mountain Lions (13-9, 11-7 RMAC) responded with five in the bottom of the second inning for a brief 5-4 lead.
The Mavericks scored two in the third, two in the fourth, one in the fifth and three more in the seventh.
Taylor Gross was 4 for 5 with two home runs and five RBI. It was her first two-home run game of her career.
Mesa pitcher Courtney Maihi (7-5) allowed nine runs on nine hits, four walks and struck out six.
Ashley Pulido (3-3) limited UCCS to four runs on eight hits and one walk for the victory in the second game. She had three strikeouts in the five-inning game.
Pulido had all the run support she needed when the Mavs scored six runs in the first inning, including two on a Carson Cooper home run. Mesa added four runs in the second and one in the third for an 11-0 lead.
Lisa Pille, who was 3 for 4 with three RBI, led off the fourth with a solo home run.
McClenahan was 2 for 5 with five RBI in the second game.
