Mavericks split baseball doubleheader

Colorado State University-Pueblo came back to take the second game of a doubleheader against the Colorado Mesa baseball team at Suplizio Field.

The ThunderWolves jumped out to an 8-0 lead and didn’t look back in a 12-5 victory. It was Mesa’s second conference loss of the season, snapping a 10-game win streak.

Joey Danner (6-1) gave up seven runs on six hits in 1 1/3 innings for the loss.

The Mavericks (25-6, 19-2 RMAC) rallied to score three runs in their last at-bat in the first game for a 7-6 victory.

Colorado Mesa junior Braden Box singled home the tying run then scored the game winner on a wild pitch from second base in the Mavericks’ 7-6 victory over CSU-Pueblo at Suplizio Field.

The Mavericks built a 4-0 lead behind another solid outing from starting pitcher Matt Williams only to see CSU-Pueblo rally to score six runs in its last at-bat in the top of the seventh.

Mesa hosts CSU-Pueblo in the final game of the series at noon Sunday at Suplizio Field.
