Mavericks split series by beating Highlands
When the Mesa State College baseball team hits, the Mavericks score runs in bunches.
Even giving up a first-inning grand slam didn’t bother the Mavericks on Sunday, one of their big hitting days.
Mesa State (6-8) came back from that four-run first inning against New Mexico Highlands to score seven runs in the fourth to beat the Cowboys 12-8 and split the weekend series. Sunday’s game was a nonconference game, however, and the No. 22 Cowboys (12-4) took the RMAC series 2-1.
The Mavericks made the most of their four hits in the big fourth inning, scoring runs on each one. Erik Nordine singled home a pair of runs, as did Kevin Becker. Brian Bellow added an RBI single and Art Flores delivered a two-run double.
Mesa added a run in the seventh and two each in the eighth and ninth, the final run coming after a rain delay in the top of the ninth inning.
Greg Anderson had an RBI double in the seventh, Flores doubled and scored on Brett Nigbur’s double in the eighth and Becker added an RBI double in the ninth and scored on Lucas Shaw’s base hit to left.
Dylan Evans threw 71⁄3 innings to pick up the win, his second against one loss, allowing seven runs on eight hits. He walked three and struck out four.
Mike Sutton and Tim Moore closed things out for the Mavericks, who collected 17 hits off three Highlands pitchers.
Becker went 2 for 6 and drove in three runs, Flores went 2 for 5 with two RBI and Nigbur went 3 for 4.
Nordine, a Grand Junction High School graduate who started at second base, went 2 for 2 and drove in a pair of runs, and third baseman Joe Schmidtbauer went 3 for 4 with one RBI.
