Mavs add depth to swimming teams with prep standouts

Colorado Mesa University swim coach Ron Allen added some needed depth to the roster with 14 men and women recruits in his first signing class.

Allen, who took over the program last year, added a variety of swimmers on the men’s side and a few backstroke specialists and middle-distance swimmers on the women’s side.

Jarren Brinton leads the six recruits for the men’s team.

The West Jordan (Utah) High School graduate won the Utah Class 5A 500-yard freestyle state title and took second in the 200.

“Jarren Brinton is probably our top one,” Allen said. “He’ll come in with times top in our conference right away.”

Tarry Burkhardt (Santa Barbara, Calif.) swims the 50 freestyle and 100 breaststroke. Ryan Gifford (Duvall, Wash.) swims breaststroke and distance events.

Kyle Johnson (Genoa, Nevada) will swim the butterfly and mid-distance freestyle. Andrew Scott (Loveland) swims the backstroke and individual medley, with Thomas Stutzriem (Colorado Springs) swimming the IM and breaststroke.

“Every one of these guys’ times comes in among the top in the conference,” Allen said.

Miranda Reetz of Arapahoe High School in Centennial leads a group of eight female recruits.

Reetz placed fifth in the Colorado Class 5A 100 breaststroke state championships.

Abi Young of Broomfield swam in the 100 and 200 freestyle in the Class 4A state championships.

Eryn Leonard led Moffat County High School and was selected the Steamboat Springs Pilot’s female athlete of the year. She placed eighth in the 100 butterfly.

“She is raw and will make an impact right away,” Allen said.

The Mavericks also signed Brianna Beardon (Scottsdale, Ariz.), Marissa Bradley (Fort Collins), Katherine Gerstmar (Portland, Ore.), Leah Hendrick (Canby, Ore.) and Dana Morgan (Novi, Mich.).

Colorado Mesa opens the season Oct. 5 with its annual Maroon and Black intrasquad, then hosts the Intermountain Shootout Oct. 11 at El Pomar Natatorium.
