Mavs clinch RMAC berth
Colorado Mesa University clinched a spot in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference volleyball tournament Friday with a , 22-25, 25-13, 25-21, 25-12 win at Western New Mexico, using a solid block to pull away.
The Mavericks (15-10, 9-8 RMAC) used their big front line to force Western New Mexico (13-13, 10-6) into one more hitting error than kill. Middle hitter Abby Ney had two solo blocks and assisted on five others as Mesa had 16 total blocks.
Melissa Hess also helped shore up the middle of the defense with four block assists.
After dropping the first game, the Mavericks ripped through the second game, taking a 10-3 lead and never really being challenged. The third game was closer, but tied 15-15, the Mavericks went on a five-point run, and a kill by Hess gave the Mavs the game and a 2-1 advantage.
Mesa led 11-6 in the fourth game when Ney went to the service line, and when the Mustangs finally got a side-out, it was 20-6.
Christian Otzen had 14 kills and Hess 11, with Ney chipping in six. Megan Rush had 14 digs, Moody 12 and Otzen 10.
