Mavs fall to Augustana, Dixie State in softball

Two one-run losses in the Silver bracket Sunday of the NFCA Leadoff Classic sent Colorado Mesa’s softball team home with a 2-4 record.

The Mavericks were placed in the second of four brackets after going 2-2 in pool play, but fell 3-2 to Augustana in the semifinal game, then dropped a 2-1 decision to Dixie State College in the third-place game.

Makayla Kovac went 1 for 3 with a solo home run in the first game after Augustana took a 3-0 lead through four innings. The Mavericks scored one run in each of the fifth and sixth innings.

Against Dixie State, ranked No. 24 in the preseason rankings, the Mavericks could manage only three hits, one a solo home run in the seventh inning by Brooke Huddleston. Dixie scored two runs on four hits off Cori Shreeves, who threw five innings.

Dixie State pitcher Michelle Duncan struck out eight CMU batters.

Niksic paces Colorado Mesa in Golden

Colorado Mesa’s Shane Niksic placed second in the men’s 800-meter run Saturday at the Joe Davies Collegiate Open indoor track meet in Golden.

Niksic finished in 1 minute, 55.34 seconds, just behind Garrett Hock of Colorado School of Mines (1:54.94). Colorado Mesa got a 3-4 finish in the 800 meters, with Shannon Emery running a 2:24.26 to place third and Ariel Ambler a 2:24.52 to place fourth.

Tiffany Ambler placed fifth in the women’s high jump at 4 feet, 9 inches, and Ethan Baier and Cameron Morley tied for fifth in the men’s high jump, each clearing 6-1 1/2. The men’s 1,600 relay team of Chris Rucker, Marcus Holliday, Randy Brown and Michael Petherick placed second in 3:49.37.
