Mavs’ Niksic wins 600-meter run in New Mexico Classic
Shane Niksic led the Colorado Mesa men’s indoor track and field team with a first-place finish in the men’s 600-meter run at the New Mexico Collegiate Classic on Saturday in Albuquerque, N.M.
The junior beat four Division I runners for the top spot with a time of 1 minute, 22.19 seconds. Alex Foster of Texas Tech was second in 1:22.5.
Niksic also placed sixth in the 800 in 1:54.2. Teammate John Cusick was sixth in the one-mile run in 4:21.48.
CMU’s Whitney Rowe placed seventh in the women’s 200 in 24.64 seconds. She was 1.12 seconds behind the winner, Cierra White of Texas Tech.
The Mavericks’ Haley Kremer was seventh in the 3,000 in 10:51.9, and Cathryn Ambler was 11th in the 800 (2:20.27).
Colorado Mesa competes in the Adams State NCAA Qualifier next Saturday.
Colorado Mesa men’s No. 1 singles player Jordan Lyden defeated the Big Sky Conference player of the week for one of two wins against Division I Northern Colorado at the Work Out West indoor facility in Greeley.
Lyden defeated the Bears’ top singles player 6-3, 6-4. Blake Demond went to a third-set, 10-point tiebreaker for the Mavericks’ other win, 6-3, 2-6, (10-8) at No. 5 singles.
The UNC women defeated the Mavericks 7-0.
Emily Dodson came the closest to getting a victory, forcing a third-set, 10-point tiebreaker before losing 6-4, 3-6, (10-3) at No. 6 singles.
