Mavs send 7 swimmers, divers to nationals
Seven Colorado Mesa swimmers and divers will compete in the NCAA Division II national championships.
The tournament field was announced Wednesday. The national championships take place March 12-15 in Geneva, Ohio.
Senior diver Brock Martin will make his fourth appearance. He is a four-time All-American and two-time Academic All-American. The RMAC Diver of the Year won the 1-meter and 3-meter events at the RMAC Championships last weekend. Martin placed fourth on the 1-meter board and eighth on the 3-meter at nationals last year.
Female divers Savannah Craft and Amanda Jennings also qualified for nationals. Jennings, a junior, placed 14th in the 1- and 3-meter events last year at nationals. Craft, a senior, qualified for nationals last year but failed to advance to the finals.
All divers must participate in the prequalification meet on March 11 prior to the national championships. The top 18 men and 22 women will compete in the diving finals.
Briana Purkapile is going to nationals for the second consecutive year. The senior qualified in the 200-yard individual medley, 400 individual medley and the 200 freestyle. She also will compete in the 1,650 freestyle and 200 butterfly. Individuals who qualified for nationals can swim in other events with a “B” cut.
Three men will make their first appearance at nationals.
Senior Kent Olsen-Stavrakas qualified in the 50 freestyle with the fourth best time in the country. He will also swim in the 100 freestyle and 100 butterfly.
Sophomore Justin Hastings, a transfer from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, qualified in the 200 backstroke. He also will compete in the 50 freestyle, 100 freestyle and 100 backstroke.
Freshman Jarren Brinton qualified for nationals in the 1,650 freestyle. The RMAC Freshman of the Year will also swim in the 200 freestyle, 500 freestyle and 1,000 freestyle.
The Mavericks sent four divers and two swimmers to nationals last year — Martin, Ryan Popp, Craft, Jennings, Mehdi El Hazzaz and Purkapile. El Hazzaz left school to return to Morocco.
