Mavs shoot well, but finish eighth
It was the best round of the tournament for the Mesa State College women’s golf team, but it wasn’t enough.
The Mavericks shot a team score of 335 in the third and final round but finished eighth in the NCAA Super Regional 3 tournament on Wednesday at Westward Ho Country Club in Sioux Falls, S.D.
Mesa State freshman Jennifer Hilts placed 13th place with a three-round total of 244. She finished five strokes behind the last individual national qualifier. Mesa’s lone senior, Sadie Peavler-Farnsworth had her best round of the tournament Wednesday and finished 33rd with 258. Afton Balling shot 260, Jessica Berve 264 and Brittani White shot 300.
Upper Iowa won the team title with a score of 930. Concordia-St. Paul (Minn.) took second with 947 and Augustana (S.D.) College placed third with 965. Mesa State took eighth with 1,026.
The top three teams qualify for the NCAA Division II national championships next week in Findlay, Ohio.
The top three individuals not on one of the top three qualifying teams also qualify for the national championships. They are Leah Grozdanich of Minnesota State-Mankato with 237,
Kalli Stanhope of Montana State-Billings with 238 and Jaymie Halvorson of Minnesota State-Mankato with a 239.
