Mavs ranked No. 34 in preseason baseball poll
Colorado Mesa is ranked 34 in the 2012 Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Division II preseason poll, as voted on by the NCAA Division II baseball committee.
The Mavericks return five starting position players and three starting pitchers from last season’s RMAC tournament champion team that reached the NCAA Central Regional and finished 35-21. It was Mesa’s 11th NCAA Regional appearance and eighth in the past 10 years.
All-Region pitchers Jared Christensen and Nolan Snell return along with catcher Colton Schoelkopf, who was a second team Gold Glove recipient. Pitcher Garrett Carpenter is back and could start after sitting out last season with an injury.
Other returning starters are pitcher Dylan Evans, infielders Braden Box, Dustin Fackrell, Colton Little and outfielder Jeff Popick.
The 2011 national champion West Florida tops the preseason poll. The Argonauts (52-9) defeated Winona State (Minn.) for the national title.
Francis Marion (S.C.) is second. Central Missouri, Grand Valley State (Mich.) and Mount Olive (N.C.) round out the top five. Winona State, which won the Central Region, is ranked 14th.
Colorado Mesa reports for its first practice in three weeks and begins the season Feb. 3 with a four-game series at Grand Canyon (Ariz.) University.
