Mesa men’s lacrosse team can’t stop Tampa from rallying
Colorado Mesa’s men’s lacrosse team had an opportunity to pick up a key regional road win, but it couldn’t hold on to its lead against the fifth-ranked team in NCAA Division II.
Tampa (9-1) scored eight goals in the second half to rally for an 10-9 victory Wednesday evening in Tampa, Fla.
The Mavericks (3-1) scored four goals in the second quarter to take a 6-2 lead.
Daniel Caddoo scored his second goal with a man-advantage for a 3-2 lead. One minute later, Joe Moreno scored. Kade Robinson found the net nearly three minutes later, then Mitch Flaherty scored with a man advantage for a 6-2 halftime lead.
Eric McCosker gave Mesa a 7-2 lead to start the second half, and held the lead until early in the fourth quarter when the Spartans tied it 9-9. Kyle Hemrick scored the game winner with 3:08 left.
Conor Whipple led Tampa with three goals and four assists.
Caddoo led Mesa with two goals and one assist.
David Solomon, Jake Douglas and Stephen Dunn also scored one goal each for the Mavs.
Mesa goaltender Brad Brandenburg made 12 saves.
Dunn was selected the Western Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association player of the week earlier Wednesday.
The junior attacker scored nine goals and had one assist in a pair of nonleague wins last week.
The Colorado Mesa men’s and women’s tennis teams picked up another regional victory over McMurry (Texas) University in Abilene, Texas.
The men (6-5) won four singles matches and two doubles matches for a 6-3 victory.
Mesa’s Jordan Lyden, the top-ranked player in the South Central Region, won 6-1, 6-4 at No. 1 singles. Trevor Brown rallied for a 6-7 (5-7), 6-4, (10-3) victory at No. 6 singles.
The women (9-7) won six singles matches and two doubles matches for a 7-2 victory.
Rachel McLaughlin rallied for a 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 4 singles. Katie Kirby won 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) at No. 5.
The Mavericks play today at Midwestern State (Texas) University.
