Mesa golf team leading regional

Jennifer Hilts managed the course at Sierra del Rio Golf Club at Elephant Butte, N.M., and leads the NCAA Division II Super Region 3 tournament by one stroke after the first round.

The Colorado Mesa University senior shot 1-over-par 73 with a two-bogey, one-birdie round.

Her finish put the Mavericks in first place, with four players finishing among the top 11 golfers.

Afton Balling shot 6-over 78 and is in fifth place and Jessica Berve and Michelle Stripp are in a five-way tie for seventh at 9-over 81.

Freshman Alissa Lindsay is in 34th after a first-round 88.

The Mavericks have a four-stroke lead over Western New Mexico after combining to shoot 313; the Mustangs are at 317 and Augustana (S.D.) is third at 323.

The top three teams at the end of the three-day, 54-hole regional tournament, and the three low scoring individuals not on those teams, advance to the national championships May 16-19 in Louisville, Ky.

Mesa’s men’s team begins play today in the Super Region near Phoenix.


Samuel Phillips of Colorado Mesa finished 14th in the USA Cycling Collegiate Nationals Division 2 road race on Sunday in Ogden, Utah, finishing in 3 hours, 22 minutes, 20 seconds. Cortlan Brown of Salt Lake Community College won the road ace in 3:20.43.

Patric Rostel, who won the criterium national championship Saturday, finished 25th in 3:23.5, Richard Geng 44th in 3:27.31 and Cullen Easter 45th in the same time.
