Mesa hosting mountain bike championships this weekend

Colorado Mesa University is hosting the Maverick Mountain Bike Championships on Saturday and Sunday. The event doubles as the Rocky Mountain Collegiate Cycling Conference Championships.

Racing starts at 8 a.m. Saturday with the cross country event at the north end of 18 Road, and dual slalom begins at 4 p.m. Saturday at The Ranch on Glade Park. Directions to The Ranch will be provided to spectators during the cross country event.

The only event Sunday is short-track racing, which begins at 8 a.m. at the north end of 18 Road.

The conference has Division I and II men’s and women’s teams, and Colorado Mesa enters the mountain biking championships in first place in the conference for Division II.

“We’re coming loaded for bear and with bad intentions for the other Division II teams,” CMU cycling coach Rick Crawford said.
