Mesa pitcher Kris Carlson drafted by Tampa Bay

Colorado Mesa University senior pitcher Kris Carlson was drafted by the Tampa Bay Rays in the 35th round of the Major League Baseball amateur draft.

The right-hander made 13 appearances in relief this season, giving up 16 earned runs in 15 innings and striking out 12 for the Mavericks.

Carlson is originally from Wenatchee, Wash., but went to Abilene Christian (Texas) University out of high school. He was drafted in the 35th round of the 2010 draft by the Royals but didn’t sign.

Mesa teammate Jeff Popick was drafted by the Colorado Rockies in the 16th round earlier in the day.
