Mesa State’s Coy is candidate for Harlon Hill Trophy

Mesa State College running back Bobby Coy is one of 24 candidates for the 2008 Harlon Hill Trophy, given each year to the best player in NCAA Division II football.

The list includes six players from each of Division II’s four Super Regionals.

“That’s very cool,” Coy said. “I wasn’t aware of (being nominated). I don’t pay attention to it.”

“It’s a big honor (to be nominated), but I’d rather take more wins,” Coy said. “It’s fun to be noticed. It’s
good publicity to the club. At the same time, it’s nice to see all the hard work starting to pay off.”

Players are nominated and voted on by the sports information directors at the 154 NCAA Division II institutions with football. The list was released Friday by the National Harlon Hill Award Committee.

The top two players from each region will advance to the national ballot next week. The winner of the 2008 award will be announced at the 23rd annual Harlon Hill Trophy Banquet on Dec. 12 in Florence, Ala.

Coy, a 5-foot-10, 205-pound junior from Littleton, is third in the nation in rushing yards per game (151.7). He broke Mesa State’s single-season rushing record this season and has 1,517 yards entering today’s regular-season finale at Nebraska-Kearney.

Michael Vaughn set the previous record in 1989. Coy is also closing in on Vaughn’s career rushing mark of 4,161 yards. Coy has 4,078 career rushing yards despite missing parts of two seasons with injuries.

“Bobby’s a character guy,” Mesa State coach Joe Ramunno said. “We knew Bobby was a pretty special player coming out of high school as the leading rusher in 5A out of Heritage. He’s been the real deal for us.”

“He’s earned his yardage,” Ramunno said. “He earns everything he gets. He catches the ball and
blocks for you.”

The list of 24 candidates includes 2007 Harlon Hill runner-up Bernard Scott of Abilene Christian. The senior running back has rushed for 1,494 yards (166.0 per game) this season.

Scott is one of six candidates this year who were candidates last year.

Thirteen quarterbacks, five running backs, three receivers, one defensive tackle, one linebacker and one cornerback are on the Harlon Hill list. There are 17 seniors, six juniors and one sophomore.

The candidates in Super Regional 3, which includes the Central and Midwest regions, are Coy, 2007 finalist and junior quarterback Brad Iciek of Grand Valley State (Mich.), junior quarterback Billy Cundiff of Ashland (Ohio), senior quarterback Joe McLain of Chadron State (Neb.), senior quarterback Ted Schlafke of Minnesota-Duluth and senior defensive tackle Jake Visser of Ferris State (Mich.).
